Habitats
and Communities |
Earth is a unique
place in the solar system. It is only one of nine planets
(as far as we know) where life exists; nothing exists alone.
Everything is dependent on some other living
or non-living factor. Ecosystems are examples of this interdependence.
A habitat is where an animal lives, where it gets its food,
water and shelter. A community is formed by a group of plants
and animals that live together in one habitat. What happens,
however, when a connection is broken, when one habitat is
threatened?

Rock. There’s
not much about that word to stimulate any kind of mystery.
We use the phrase, “As solid as a rock” when we
wish to describe the immobility of an object. But, is this
phrase really accurate? Looking at rock leads one to believe
that it is stable - yet, over time, it is subject to dramatic
change. Not only does it crumble, but it metamorphoses as
well.
Through this unit, students will be introduced to the basics
of geology, erosion and the ever-appealing world of fossils.

Weather |
Hurricane Mitch, the Ice Storm of 1998, the wildfires in
Indonesia are only three samples of the power of “weather”.
What is El Nino and how can it so dramatically change the
weather patterns around the world?
Students will learn that daily weather patterns are linked
to conditions around the world and that to a certain degree,
can be predicted.

Diversity
of Living Things |
Tearing/ chewing, sucking, sponging,
lapping, piercing/ sucking. Humans like to classify, number
and organize things.
Students will experiment with a variety of classification
systems that will allow them to observe and describe similarities
and differences among species more precisely.

Interactions
Within Ecosystems |
In the biosphere, there are many
different ecosystems. Each system is balanced between living
and non-living factors in a natural environment. The individual
players within each system have adapted to their environment.
People are the only players who change their environment,
rather than adapt to it, to make our lives easier.

The
Earth’s Crust |
It is hard to believe that while
we rest comfortably in Canada, on one of the world’s
most stable plates, people dodge the dangers brought about
by earth-shattering earthquakes and sudden-impact volcanoes.
This unit will allow students to review rocks and minerals
and take them one step further - to investigate the continuing
impact of earthquakes, volcanoes and landslides continue to
have on our changing world.

Water
Systems |
When living on the shore of one
of the Great Lakes it is very easy to take water for granted.
We should celebrate our good fortune that about 20% of the
WORLD’S available fresh water is nearby. It is difficult
to imagine that 40% of the world’s population live with
water scarcity daily.
Students will study the water cycle to increase their understanding
of weather, erosion, currents, water treatment, consumption
patterns, health and political issues.
