EARTH AND SPACE SYSTEMS - THE EARTH'S
CRUST
INTRODUCTION
It is hard to believe that while we rest comfortably in Canada,
on one of the world’s most stable plates, people dodge the
dangers brought about by earth-shattering earthquakes and sudden-impact
volcanoes. Even with the development of more sophisticated detection
equipment, natural disasters continue to take their toll on the
world. So, why do we remain so apparently unaffected by these “earthly”
events? Has there ever been a volcano in Ontario? What, in fact
caused the formation of the Niagara Escarpment and the mysterious
caves at the Collingwood Scenic Caves? This unit will allow students
to review rocks and minerals and take them one step further - to
investigate the continuing impact of earthquakes, volcanoes and
landslides continue to have on our changing world.
STUDENT DEMONSTRATION PROJECT
Computer: Students will use the computer to update
themselves about current geographic events related to volcanoes
and earthquakes. They will trace the behaviour of one active volcano
from the news and define what measures have been taken by authorities
in order to moderate the devastating effect of the volcano.
Debate: Students will examine the structure of
the Scenic Caves and what natural processes caused their origin.
Further investigations will lead students to discover how industry
has benefited from these natural processes - including the mining
industry. Students will debate the issue of industry along the Niagara
Escarpment in terms of its costs and benefits to society and a what
cost to nature? They have the option of presenting their debate
to the Niagara Escarpment Commission or to the Ministry of Natural
Resources.
